McDermott: Start with Andy

McDermott believes Carroll's performances towards the end of Liverpool's 2011-12 campaign rightfully earned him a place in the 23-man England squad.
And the three-time European Cup winner tipped Carroll to shine at this year's tournament if given the opportunity to showcase his talent.
"I really hope Andy starts against France," McDermott told the Liverpool Echo. "He deserves to after the way he finished the season with Liverpool. His form towards the end was excellent.
"He really showed people what he was capable of after a slow start to the season. That was the Andy Carroll we saw playing for Newcastle.
"He's a real threat and no defenders at the Euros will enjoy marking him. In European centre backs are ball players, they won't like being pummelled by a 6ft 3ins striker.
"Andy is capable of having a really big impact on this tournament."

Stevie: I wouldn't swap Suarez

Suarez was unplayable at Carrow Road last Saturday, netting his first ever Liverpool hat-trick in sensational style. The third of his strikes, a sumptuous lob from 45 yards, will surely be a contender for Goal of the Season.
And Gerrard is convinced that having the No.7 in such deadly form can provide a crucial boost to Liverpool's chances of bringing home an eighth FA Cup when they face Chelsea at Wembley tomorrow.
"It's great for us that Luis is going into the final in such tremendous form," Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo. "It was a magical hat-trick at Norwich. He took his goals brilliantly. He showed that he's a world-class player. At the moment I wouldn't swap Luis for anyone in the world.
"I've got faith in our squad. We have been fantastic in the cups this season and we need to continue that.
"We've proved we can compete with the top sides this season. Now we have to overcome another one to win the trophy."
The day after Suarez set Carrow Road alight with a glorious treble, former Red Fernando Torres grabbed a hat-trick of his own against QPR at Stamford Bridge.
This came in the wake of a goal at the Nou Camp earlier that week which dispatched holders Barcelona from the Champions League.

Jonjo out to stake final claim

28 April 2012

'We want CL, but we've improved'

Glen Johnson admits the Champions League is where Liverpool want to be - but he is adamant that this season will be viewed as a success if the FA Cup comes back to Anfield.
In a sit-down chat with Liverpoolfc.tv ahead of Saturday's visit to Norwich, the full-back gave his assessment of a campaign in which good performances have been rewarded in the cups but not the league.
"Of course, we'd like to be in the Champions League - and that was the aim at the start of the season, to finish in the top four," said Johnson, who was part of the Liverpool team that beat Cardiff to lift the Carling Cup in February.
"But we can't do that now and if we come away with two medals then you can't say it's a negative season. Last season we didn't have any medals or the top four.
"It's an improvement on last season but the main priority is still to get in the top four."
Johnson also spoke of what is motivating the team in the league now Champions League qualification is impossible and entry into the Europa League has been secured via the Carling Cup.
He says the players want to finish as high as possible in the table and also reward supporters who make long journeys such as the one to Carrow Road.
"The fans pay their money and go to the hassle of travelling all that way to watch the team play," said the England international.
"It's always nice to put on a show for those fans but I'm sure they'd take an ugly performance and three points - the same as the players would.
"But ideally we'll play well and win.
"We're not going to make the top four but the higher up the table the better."
Norwich left Anfield with a point in October after Grant Holt equalised a Craig Bellamy strike.
Kenny Dalglish labelled the encounter a 'mirror image' of many frustrating days Anfield has witnessed in 2011-12.
One stat to come out of that is Liverpool hitting the woodwork 30 times.

33 match facts from LFC's statto

Here are all the facts and figures ahead of our trip to Carrow Road courtesy of official club statistician Ged Rea.

Earlier this season the sides drew 1-1 at Anfield. Craig Bellamy scored against his former club in first-half stoppage time with Grant Holt equalising on the hour mark. It was Bellamy's first league goal since his summer return to Anfield.
The last meeting between the teams at Carrow Road came in January 2005 with the Reds winning 2-1 thanks to second-half goals from Luis Garcia and John Arne Riise. Only Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard who played that day remain at Anfield.
